washing machine of the gods

Okay, so I’m interested in (among other things) energy efficiency. And of course, that’s a no-brainer, because you save money. To quote the Jerky Boys: “I need dough like anyone.”

So I have been looking at appliances, and it came to my attention that the washer and dryer are significant energy consumers in a typical house. And of course, focusing on the biggest energy consumers will have the most noticeable overall impact on your bills (hey, efficient nightlights are great, but the big stuff is where the money is). And I came across this remarkable washing machine. Revolutionary in most every way. And I’m likely to get myself one.

The Staber System 2000 is a miracle of common-sense design. And it’s made in the USA. Fundamentally, it uses far less water and detergent to accomplish cleaning your clothes, which makes it more energy efficient. But it also extracts more water from the wash, so you save on the dryer end as well.

At every turn, this seems to be a better designed and built washing machine. It’s a horizontal axis design (like the front-loaders) but still toploads. It has stainless steel inner and outer tubs, no plastic. It has dual bearings. You can take the front panel off and conveninetly service the belt, bearings, and motor. It has a patented hexagonal tub design. It’s simple, and apparently easy to service.

It’s practical. It’s based on a commercial washer design. It’s rugged. And maybe best of all, it will save an average family some $300/year on utilities and detergent, so it pays for itself in about three years. How could I not get one of these?

I should tell everyone that the reason the Arnolds don’t have a washing machine/dryer right now and are looking to buy a new one is because they very generously gave me theirs for a house warming gift when I bought a house last year (I’m his wife’s best friend). Rob, I hope you get your Staber System 2000!!
