drywall continues some more

I could really bore you to tears with drywall pictures. But I’ll refrain. Instead I’ll just hit the high notes and tell you that we decided on a bullnose corner bead in a lot of places that will give a really interesting finish to the corners. We saw this for the first time in the model that builder Chad showed us, and we were pretty impressed. The cabinet maker uses a very similar treatment on the outside corners of the cabinets, so it ties in and looks really cool; that’s what sold it to me.

I looked around for info on this sort of bullnose drywall corner bead, because I haven’t seen it used much. I couldn’t really find anyone’s opinion from a homeowner perspective, unfortunately (let me know if you have any thought–fill out the comment form below). Our builder likes them because he gets fewer callbacks for cracked corners.

We spent a lot of time discussing how to use the bullnose treatment and where. In the end, communication issues sort of took over and made the decision for us in a practical sense–the drywall sub did what they thought was the last thing they were told to do. It wasn’t exactly what we wanted, but it worked out okay in the end.

The lesson for you folks getting ready to try this: the time to make decisions and communicate them to your builder is befor the sub shows up on the jobsite. In this case, our builder was the weak link to the chain of command–he left phone mails and assumed they’d get through. All the stress was ultimately unnecessary, and we got a nice looking finish that I’m sure we’ll be happy with. Not every story will come out with that happy ending, so talk to your builder early and often about this kind of thing.
