architect interviews
We have another appointment for an initial interview with an architect this Thursday at seven p.m. This is a guy our builder recommended.
We met with an architect last week, one that was recommended to us by the forms company, but she didn’t really impress us a lot. She didn’t seem too interested in our project, and she made some comments that struck us as ill-informed (to be polite about it). We ran some of the things she said past our builder as a sanity check, and he confirmed our suspicions.
That’s what led to this other recommendation. My wife spoke with him on the phone, and said he seemed nice. I have prepared a small package that I’m giving to the architects we’re interviewing, I’ll post that info up here soon, it’s back on my machine at home.
Since we’re using insulating concrete forms, I can’t just go out and hire any architect. I suppose that I could, but I’d prefer one with experience using the ICF system. I’ll let you know how this interview went.

gl with the interviewing… i’ll be interested to see your ‘pack’, you certainly seem clued up about what you need. I hope you get a good architect when i did a weeks work experience at the local architectural practice i was slightly concerned by the fact that quite a lot of them lacked a certain amount of flair.
Although your house is going to be a very interesting and important part of your life an architect may be just considering it a run-of-the-mill job and therefore perhaps not as interested. In fact when i was talking to a partner in an architecture firm he listed the worst thing about the job as dealing (or having even) clients. Therefore I’d place a lot of importance in getting an interested architect which maybe might mean someone with not as much experience in ICFs.
Still, 6 of one, half a dozen of another. I’d expect your ability in design to help the creative process and makesure you’re involved in the initial design processes as it’ll help you steer the architect onto the kind of house you’re expecting a lot faster. Without some kick a lot of architects will give you something straight out of predefined components without any imagination… and i’m sure you wouldn’t like that much.
