closed

We closed on our construction loan today. That's a big milestone, because it means that stuff will now start to happen. And hopefully continue to happen. Our builder is expecting to break ground next week.

surplus madness again

Today's trip to the surplus store netted some real bargains once again. I got three in-wall stereo speakers, plus a pretty good deal on a sewage ejector pump. I spent tonight hooking up the speakers and auditioning them. I'm not planning on trying out the sewage ejector anytime soon, as much fun as it may sound. And the bonus item: a 6-cell Mag Lite.

finally a little construction

We've finalized the arrangements with our builder, and now we're just waiting on the paperwork to get finished on transfer of the deed to our lot. Once the bank gives us a green light there, we can close on our loan and get construction started in earnest, but for now we have some stakes in the ground at least.

soil survey

So this week's progress consists of digging a hole in the ground and sending soil samples to the county's environmental department. The ultimate purpose of which is to obtain the elusive septic system permit, without which I can't start construction. Fortunately, a couple permits have already been cut in the subdivision, so I'm not sweating whether the drainage will become an issue--it will be fine. Tonight I'm going to try to get out there and look at this hole in the ground, I haven't seen yet what they did. Expect some pics of a hole soon if everything goes my way...

contract

This weekend we signed a contract with builder Chad. It took a bit of doing, but I think the time spent discussing some of the specifics up fron will pay off. Our expectations are properly set, and I think builder Chad's are as well, so I would expect fewer (not zero, that would be unrealistic) expectation mismatches once the project is underway.

whole house audio revisited

I've been planning for whole house audio all along. But the longer I have to think about it, the more good ideas I come up with. The latest inspiriation comes from messing around lately with MP3 files and Win2k server. Yeah, I know I'm a few years behind the times on this whole MP3 thing, but I promise I'll make up for lost time.

on the road again

My wife talked to the county this morning about plans for a major road near our property. Some of that becomes interesting as we try to place our house on the lot.

The north end of our property faces 107th street and is 335 feet wide. The east end is 1270 feet, and abuts a neighboring lot of the same size as ours. The likely location for the major road is through the adjacent property to the east. So we got interested enough to make a few calls to find out where this little project actually stood.
