custom home ++ trim carpentry day 2 10/10/2003

« Previous entry: trim carpentry: day 1 || Next entry: pictures of cows »

More of the same from day 1, plus a couple scheduling surprises. All the doors are hung now, and the baseboard is in place almost everywhere. Work got started on trimming the windows, but only a couple are done, which is good, because they're not doing exactly what I wanted with the trim.

The surprise was that the kitchen cabinets, vanities, and utility room cabinets got delivered Thursday too. They're stacked in the garage, and placed with the faces inward so I couldn't really get a great look, but what I did see looked outstanding.

Baseboard really adds a lot to the room, especially where we have the small bumpouts that define a doorway without a door hanging in it. The way it interacts with the drywall finish creates a multiple transition--from rounded drywall corner to square drywall corner to the slight ogee at the top of the baseboard to the large part of the baseboard that's square.

But the real excitement was from seeing my cabinets for the first time. These are completely custom cabinets. They're made from Alder and this door style is something I've never seen before anywhere. The doors are mitered so no end grain shows at all. There's a very gentle roundover to the doors too, it's really beautiful. This was the first I saw my actual cabinets, prior to this I'd just seen a sample door in the showroom.
