custom home ++ framing is under way 06/10/2003

Last night's visit was exciting--much more lumber had been delivered, along with the steel beams and some other goodies. The sill plate was bolted onto the top of the foundation, and a couple of garage walls were framed. We got to see some of that Tyvek wrap in action, and actually hear it, because the 15 mph wind was making it flap around a lot which made a ton of noise. In fact, if you ever need to make a lot of really annoying noise, Tyvek house wrap may be the ideal solution.
Everything was neatly stacked, which pleased me. They even tidied up the OSB that got tipped over. And there was a loader on site to facilitate moving the stuff around. We let Buzz take a shot at driving it.

The excitement was somewhat tempered, however, by a siding mishap. Our specs call for lap siding applied in a skip lap pattern. We even went as far as to refer to a particular house where our builder used this technique in our specs.

What was getting applied to our walls was sort of a siding that had the look of a 4-inch and an 8-inch board that fit together tounge-and-groove fashion, but was one 12-inch piece. The fit didn't overlap, so it didn't look like lap siding at all. In fact, it looked like it was intended to be installed vertically instead of horizontally. We drove out to look at the house with the stuff we specified, and almost every house in the development had a version of this product on the rear and side exterior walls, installed vertically. This version just didn't have the 4/8 split, otherwise it was the same stuff.
Anyway, on with the pictorial:

Overall, I'm still happy with the progress, but we have to correct this siding discrepancy. Builder Chad has been pretty good about stuff like this, the garage door discrepancy got fixed without any fuss or muss, but this is a bigger deal since there's a stack of material on the site, and not using it may slow down the project. As of end of today, no response form builder Chad about this issue, even though I left him two phone mails.
